The UK government has launched a £10 million competition to advance innovative technologies that allow EV chargepoints to operate without major grid connections or even off-grid. This initiative aims to accelerate the deployment of chargepoints on England’s motorways and major A-roads, improving long-distance charging access for drivers, according to a press release from the Department for Transport and the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles on 3 November 2025.
Private operators can apply through Innovate UK until 25 March 2026. The funding focuses on grid-constrained and hard-to-power locations, supporting solutions that integrate renewable energy sources like solar with battery storage to avoid costly grid upgrades and speed up rollout in rural areas and along the strategic road network.
Eligible projects must enable at least 12 EVs to access ultra-rapid charging, providing approximately 120-145 miles of range in about 15 minutes for a typical EV. Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation, Keir Mather MP, stated that the funding will increase chargepoints on motorways and major A-roads, support British innovation, and make EV travel more convenient.
This announcement comes as UK public chargepoints reach a record 86,021, a 23% increase year-on-year, with rural areas experiencing the fastest growth. It complements the £650 million Electric Car Grant and an upcoming consultation designed to reduce barriers for renters and households without driveways to install home chargers.
