CFX has introduced what it calls a ‘revolutionary testbed for electric in-vehicle charging,’ targeting both consumer and commercial drivers.
The Central Florida Expressway Authority will integrate an ‘electrified roadway’ into the construction of the State Road 516 Lake/Orange Expressway in Lake and Orange counties.
The expressway will be built in three segments, with the first segment featuring a pilot project to test roadway electrification for charging electric vehicles. A three-quarter-mile stretch will be equipped with a wireless charging system.
This system will operate only with specially equipped vehicles used for testing. CFX’s solution is designed to benefit both consumer and commercial drivers.
Construction is set to begin this year, with completion expected in 2029. Similar projects have been piloted in other states, including the first wireless electric road in the US, completed in Detroit, Michigan, in late 2023.
Wireless, on-the-go EV charging addresses concerns about the limited availability of charging stations for long-distance travel. Instead of detouring to find a charger, drivers could receive power while driving. Static wireless charging has already been used successfully to speed up charging for commercial vehicles.
While range anxiety often stems from a lack of awareness about available chargers, on-the-go charging offers significant advantages for commercial drivers who must adhere to strict schedules and routes.
CFX has not yet disclosed details about the project’s technology provider.
