ENA Launches Guidance Tool to Help Electrify Transport Assets

The Energy Networks Association (ENA) has launched a new online tool aimed at helping organisations introduce or expand electric transport fleets.

The new Transport Connections Guidance tool is designed to guide commercial, government, and not-for-profit organisations through the essential steps before submitting a grid connection application for EV charging infrastructure.

This interactive tool, developed and tested by ENA with partial funding from UK distribution network operators (DNOs), simplifies what can often be a complex and costly process.

Tailored, Step-by-Step Support

Users can input details including:

  • Location
  • Business type
  • Number of employees
  • Current electricity demand

The tool then directs users to relevant DNO resources, outlines required application information, and explains technical terms involved in the connection process.

Part of ENA’s Broader Digital Support Strategy

This is not the first digital tool launched by ENA. In May 2024, the association introduced Connect Direct, an AI-powered platform aimed at streamlining grid connection applications for EV chargers and home heat pumps.

Connect Direct quickly gained traction, handling 1,000 applications in its first month and surpassing 15,000 applications within six months.

Business Frustration Over Grid Connection Barriers

A 2024 study by chargepoint operator Believ revealed that:

  • 88% of UK businesses are already installing EV chargepoints
  • 57% plan to double charging capacity by 2028
  • 70% reported delays due to grid upgrade complexities
  • 11% labelled grid collaboration as a “significant barrier”
  • 27% cited difficulty securing local council support
  • 74% said they need specialist help

Meeting the Surge in Demand

Dan Clarke, Head of Innovation at ENA, said the new tool addresses the expected rise in demand for electric transport connections, particularly from sectors unfamiliar with navigating the UK’s electricity system.

“This tool aims to provide users with an enhanced understanding of the questions they need to ask themselves in order to progress their decarbonisation journey,” said Clarke.
“It will enable them to adjust their connection applications to meet the technical standards set by the distribution networks and develop an efficient connection.”

Government Backing for EV Transition

Lilian Greenwood, Future of Roads Minister at the Department for Transport, endorsed the initiative:

“The future of electric transport in the UK is brilliant. We’re working closely with the ENA to aid this transition, and it’s fantastic to see the new guidance which will help the industry make the switch.”
